The Portuguese tenor Rodrigo Carreto is a rising presence on the international opera and concert stage, praised for his “stylistic clarity and expressive depth.” Currently based in Zurich, he was a laureate of the 11th edition of Le Jardin des Voix (2023/24) with Les Arts Florissants under William Christie — a milestone that led to his debuts at the Royal Albert Hall (BBC Proms), Teatro alla Scala, Lincoln Center in New York, the Romanian Athenaeum, National Auditorium of Music in Madrid, and Palau de les Arts in Valencia, as well as appearances at major festivals such as Lucerne, Tanglewood, Lanaudière, and Toronto, among others.
Praised by Scherzo as a “magnificent” performer with a voice that is “flexible, melodious, and full of nuance,” Rodrigo Carreto has established himself as one of the leading young interpreters of the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions, while increasingly gaining recognition as a sought-after interpreter of Mozart and the principal tenor repertoire of the Baroque.

In the 2025/26 season, on the operatic stage, Carreto made his debut at the Drottningholm Opera as Eurimedes in Telemann’s Orpheus under Francesco Corti and toured South America with Les Arts Florissants led by William Christie. He creates the role of Gerardo in the world premiere of Luís Tinoco’s Relicário Perpétuo at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, under the baton of Joana Carneiro.
On the concert stage, he performed the arias in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Gli Angeli Genève (Stephen Macleod) at the Victoria Hall and in a Dutch tour with Philzuid under Enrico Onofri. His recent performances as the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion with Andreas Scholl and Divino Sospiro and Carlos Mena and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra earned extraordinary acclaim, with critics noting his “impeccable diction” and “narrative ability that sustained the tension of the story”. He also performed Mozart’s Requiem with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under Stephanie Childress and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra under Roberto González-Monjas.
The 2026/27 season is anchored by a series of major Passion performances across Europe, including the Evangelist in both Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and Peter Whelan and a highly anticipated return to the Gulbenkian Orchestra for the same work. Other highlights include the Bomtempo Requiem with the Orquestra RTVE under Marc Korovitch, Campra’s Requiem at the Royal Chapel of Versailles with the Ensemble Correspondances and Sébastien Daucé, among other highlights to be announced.
Further notable engagements included Handel’s Messiah with the Oviedo Filarmonía (Alberto Miguélez Rouco), Britten’s Fourteen Folk Songs with the Münchner Symphoniker (Ustina Dubitsky), and an appearance in Mysliveček’s Adamo ed Eva with Il Gardellino Orchestra (Peter van Heyghen) in Palermo.
The 2024/25 season saw Carreto join Les Arts Florissants for an international tour of over 30 performances of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen — in which he was particularly noted for his role as Autumn — appearing at the Philharmonies of Paris and Luxembourg and the Lucerne Festival. Other highlights include Monteverdi’s Vespers conducted by Paul Agnew, Lully’s Te Deum with the Divino Sospiro Orchestra under Václav Luks, and English Divine Hymns with William Christie at the Lanaudière Festival.
Selected as one of the “Bach Young Soloists 2021” with Collegium Vocale Gent, Rodrigo toured for two seasons under Philippe Herreweghe.
He has extensive international experience across Europe, the USA, and China, performing with leading ensembles such as La Capella Nacional de Catalunya (Jordi Savall), La Cetra Barockorchester (Andrea Marcon), and the J. S. Bach-Stiftung (Rudolf Lutz).

He has developed a particular affinity with Bach’s music: in addition to the St John Passion, St Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio, his repertoire includes over 50 cantatas, as well as major works such as the Magnificat and the Mass in B minor.
An avid recitalist, he regularly performs song cycles by Finzi, Schubert, Schumann, and Debussy. On the operatic stage, his roles include Acis in Handel’s Acis and Galatea, among others.
